CONAN – SYNOPSIS
In the year before this two wizards battled for control of a piece of land. At the time no one was aware of the battle. The piece of land, it seemed, was nothing special containing a small copse of evergreen trees, two villages with a total population of about 200 souls and a small river fed from an underground source. The wizards, Hralf the Jaded and Melkinar of Stygia, used the most powerful of their magic’s against one another. In the end they were both destroyed by the demons they summoned to destroy the other.
The lords of the city the party finds itself in have recently learned that the two towers belonging to the wizards are now safe to enter. The guards of the city almost mutinied when asked to approach them to steal the secrets. The lords of the city have issued a proclamation that they will pay 500 gold pieces to any and all adventurers who will undertake a mission to each tower and bring back certain items once held by each wizard. On the face of it this seems quite a good offer and several bands of mercenaries have accepted the charge.
To date none of these bands has returned to claim the reward. In fact none of the parties has been seen since. When the first party did not return the city elders believed that they had merely grabbed what treasure they could and gone. The same for parties two and three who likewise vanished without claiming reward. However the ideas of the lords changed when the last remaining member of party number four crawled through the city gate injured and suffering from dehydration and starvation. He was not to live long but he did pass on a warning before he died.
With his last breath he whispered, “Hralf lives…Beware the eyes”.
The poor wretch died leaving a puzzle behind. The city fathers were sure that both wizards had perished. They had made sure they followed the strict rituals for the disposal of both bodies. They had embalmed them swathed them in holy ointment and then burned the bodies atop the sacred mountain. There was no way that either wizard was still alive. Yet there was now proof that one of the wizards had avoided death or at least had attained some sort of afterlife. This has not stopped the lords from wanting the wizards secrets and they are willing to pay…
So the stage is set. You are now in the city and yet again penniless you have managed to pay for lodging in one of the less reputable inns in the poorer part of the city and there is work to be had.
You have taken work as Steward, Doorman, Waiter or Barker whatever your character can turn his or her hand too.
