March, April and May death by Conan
OK people,
You may have noticed that there has been a lack of write up for the last three months gaming, this is because in the March session the entire party was horribly killed in a dungeon crawl. April was a build up session when the gamers who run the party created and built up new characters.
Our party which had until now survived the gods, magic ogres and a meeting with Santa Claus walked down a single corridor and in a freak and devestating dice roll plunged themselves 100 feet on to a demon infested pit with spikes, if only they had done what the GM told them they would have survived.
So April saw a new party ready to brave the same dungeon in search of themselves. Some gamers hate it when their beloved characters die but gamely create a new character that they can nurture and improve, others don’t care to do this and as a result they keep the same character as the “twin Brother/Sister/cousin/son/daughter of” the original I played one game where a family of 35 gnomes all perfect copies was decimated by a rather inept gamer. This can become boring at times but those of you who know me will know that I am anything but boring…OK maybe sometimes. In this case the culprit said to his GM (Yours Truly) just give me the same character. Well that is not where I come from and therefore I took the concept - A strapping 7ft tall nordheimer barbarian(already sent back from Valhalla) - and inserted his essence into a 5ft female thief the results have so far been amusing as the player has not been able to make the session due to family issues (Mike we are all thinking of you mate) and to help her survival I have had the other players make a wisdom and strength check. The party now does not stand to close behind her after several of them have been inadvertently stabbed with a great sword larger than the thief.
Now I would not want you - gentle reader - to think that we hairy old gamers are frivilous about our play but we have some very humerous moments. One needs only remember the Spademaster and the squirrel, the two orc thieves and the backstabbing dancing sword to know that when it comes to humour there is a lot of it about. But we gamers tend to intersperse them with serious fighting, solemn preying and determined attempts to turn ourselves into vampires. Indeed often all at the same time. But rambling aside at what point do we say to ourselves “Ok less humour more savage orc slaying” the answer is surprising… At least it would be surprising if we ever had time to ask ourselves the question in the first place.
The party make up has not changed so much but there are subtle shifts in the dynamic. The Picts have gone, so have the Nordheimers replaced by an effete group of Hyborians, Aquilonians and Pelishtim as well as an Undead and a Vendyhan. As parties go the mix seems to work, the mystics healing properties coming in very handy. The loss of the party includes the paranoid pelishtim Ukufos. Ukufos, you will remember, had a small harem and just before his untimely demise he had them stolen from him. They found their way back to the giant innkeeper at the village of Crossbridges. Rufus welcomed them and set them up in positions within his village, they were independently wealthy and so they had no need to work but they liked the idea of indulging their passions.
After several months the girls wanted to return to Ukufos however Rufus had learned of their master’s demise and was there to comfort the girls and prevent them from setting off in an ill advised attempt to find his body. After several weeks Rufus finally agreed that they should find Ukufos’s body and bury him in the grounds of his mansion in Festeen. Rufus organised a retinue and sent two of the girls off to gather a group of adventurers to aid them in the quest. They arrived around six months later the girls and thier retinue arrived at Messantia and started the recruitment process.
Around the same time the new party, fragmented, was carousing, wining and dining and had ended up seperately in a brothel on the Street of Hospitality. They were brought together as a group when the local ruffian gang tried to rob them, they had to flee through the city ending up in a temple of Mitra. In this temple they made an enemy in the shape of a succubus who was attempting to gain power. The party had several innocencents and the Demon was drawn to them like an alcoholic to a bottle of scotch.
They escaped the succubus and soon after several further escapes and a few successful adventures the individuals had bonded into a fairly coherent group. They had left Messantia as a way of getting out of the succubus’ sphere of influence and upon their return they met the girls and were offered a large sum of money to find the remains of Ukufos.
So the beautiful but insane Thief, Runt, the Vendayhan mystic, Rajni, her Bodyguard, the mysterious Knight Errant Kornas, prepared with thier team mates, Kleevar Fakear the Brawler, Alrek the Hyperborean Borderer, Emilius Forbes an Aquilonian nomad and a magician (the party believe) who aided them and was able to point them in the right direction using some arcane spell. The party now set off to the wilds to see if they could earn the 80,000 gold crowns promised by their lady patron. They languish still in the tomb of horror and we will rejoin them after the next session.
